Would you have thrown away this plant? It did bloom like crazy with big showy flowers. It grew vigorously, and was very healthy. But it didn't set any fruit. It produced nearly no pollen and it wasn't cold hardy. When you breed plants you have to make decisions. Lots of them. Some plants go to the next stage, while others have to go. If you are serious about plant breeding, then 90 % of what you create has to die. Just because it's not perfect. You just want to keep the best. My goal is to breed cold hardy passionfruit. So a plant that seems to be sterile and not winter hardy is of no use. Fortunately I didn't have to kill the plant, as it died on its own during the winter. That's sad, but necessary to move on and create even better plants. Improvement of pig breed:Many private companies like pic, danbred and genusus are involved in breeding and upgrading of pig breeds for commercial production of gilts which they sell. This is a time taking process which need patience and time. How they do:1. Selection of female is done witth history of large litter size and maximum weaning pigletsNot all pure breed has same performance in a herd. So female with good quality is selected. As we know landrace breed was evolved from Yorkshire breed. So landrace equally has big litter size capacity like large white Yorkshire has. For F1 generation landrace male or Yorkshire male is selected to cross female Yorkshire or landrace. Male and female should not be of same breed. This F1 gilt is then crossed with duroc male. Duroc male is selected upon their high growth, less back fat, good fcr criteria. So the F2 gilt produced will have good little size, fast growth and F2 male will have high growth, lean meat and good fcr. Landrace and Yorkshire act as grand parent. And F1 sow will act as parent mother. Apart from above parameters another criteria which is considered is no of ribs and lumbar and thoracic vertebrae number. No of teat in sow is also major criteria and this should not be less than 12 teats. High number of ribs and vertebrae makes body long and yield good carcass weight. A medium size farmer can apply this procedure to improve their pig breed for more frofit.Some improved breed include ks11, TN70, danbred, camborough. Poland china and PIETRIEN are individual breeds not used in commercial production but good performance can be seen in few.

Breeding Hardy PassionfruitThree years ago I started a program to breed frost hardy passionfruit for Central Europe at Lubera.The breeding program is primarily aimed at Passiflora incarnata and hybrids with this species. We grew around 1500 different genotypes from seed those last 3 years and we now have a pipeline with some very promising plants. Which is amazing!In the picture, you can see a few of the hundreds of passionflowers on the breeding field. Those flowers are just incredibly beautiful and diverse. But there is even more variability in other traits. Like:Big - small leavesRed - white stemsErect or crawling habitFull of flowers or only leaves...And of course fruits… (size, taste, yield,…)This is just the beginning of a long journey, but I am already very excited to see the rich diversity and the enormous advances in the last 6 years. Plant breeding is a lot of fun. Indicator of the week: Breeding success of waterbirds This candidate indicator represents a pilot example for the common guillemot near Gotland and shows how the indicator evaluation works. The results show the species is in good condition in terms of breeding success, with a population growth rate increasing over three generations (74.4 years). The good status regarding breeding success points to favourable feeding conditions. However, this positive outcome is partly due to overfishing of cod, which increases the availability of small fish as food. Therefore, this indicator should be considered alongside other ecosystem evaluations.
